Why Your Achilles Hurts After Standing All Day

There is a particular version of Achilles pain that has nothing to do with running.

It shows up after a shift, not during one. It is worst the first few steps after you finally sit down, and worst again the next morning. It is not sharp — it is a thick, tight ache at the back of the heel, sometimes with a spot that is tender if you pinch it.

If that is your version, the cause is different from the runner's version, and so is the fix.

What standing does that walking does not

Walking cycles load. Your calf and Achilles contract to push off, then release as the other foot takes over. Contract, release, contract, release — and the release phase is when blood moves through the tendon.

Standing does not cycle. It parks a low-level load on the calf and Achilles and leaves it there for hours. Your calf is working the entire time to keep you upright, at a low enough intensity that you never notice it, without ever fully releasing.

Two things follow.

The tendon stays loaded without recovery. Tendons are relatively poorly supplied with blood, and what circulation they get depends heavily on the muscle cycling. Sustained static load is close to the worst case.

The calf shortens. A muscle held at a fixed length for hours adapts to that length. A shorter calf pulls harder on the Achilles at its heel attachment, which is exactly where it usually hurts.

This is why it hurts after rather than during — during the shift, the tissue is warm and loaded steadily. When you stop, it cools and stiffens, and the first steps afterward pull on a tightened structure.

The footwear factor most people miss

Two things about your shoes matter more here than anywhere else.

Heel height. A slight heel raise reduces tension on the Achilles; a completely flat shoe increases it. This is why flat, unsupportive work shoes make this worse and why a small heel-to-toe drop often helps. It is not an argument for high heels — it is an argument against dead flat.

Whether the shoe still has anything left. A midsole and insole that have compressed to flat give you nothing, and on hard floors that means every hour of the load goes straight into your foot and calf. If your work shoes are more than a year old and you stand for a living, they are almost certainly done.

And the arch. When the arch collapses over the course of a day, the calf works harder to stabilize the ankle. Support that holds the arch through hour ten reduces how much compensating the calf has to do — which is the connection between arch support and a pain that seems to have nothing to do with your arch.

The catch is that most insoles do not hold through hour ten. They are built from closed-cell foam that permanently compresses under sustained load — and standing all day is the most punishing load an insole gets. Here is what that means and how to check yours.

What to do about it

Before and after your shift

Calf stretching, twice daily, both variations. Wall stretch with the back leg straight for 30 seconds, then again with the back knee slightly bent to catch the deeper soleus muscle — the soleus is the one that matters most for standing, and the straight-leg stretch alone misses it.

During the shift

  • Move. Shift weight, take a few steps, rise onto your toes and lower slowly a few times every hour. You are giving the tendon the pumping cycle standing takes away.
  • Rotate two pairs of shoes across days. Foam needs time to recover and yours does not get any if you wear the same pair every day.
  • Use an anti-fatigue mat if you have a fixed station.

Over the following weeks

Heel raises. Stand on flat ground, rise onto your toes over three seconds, lower over three seconds, ten to fifteen reps, twice a day. Progress to doing them off the edge of a step so the heel drops below level, then to one leg at a time.

This is the intervention with the most support behind it for Achilles problems, and it is free. It also takes six to twelve weeks — slow, but it works, and nothing works faster.

When to see someone

  • Pain that is sharp rather than aching, or that gets worse during activity rather than after
  • A visibly thickened or lumpy section of the tendon
  • Pain that has not improved after six to eight weeks of consistent stretching and loading work
  • Any sudden pop, snap, or inability to push off — this needs same-day attention

The short version

Standing loads your calf and Achilles continuously and never lets them release. Stretch both calf muscles twice a day, do slow heel raises, rotate your shoes, avoid dead-flat footwear, and get support under your arch that is still doing its job at hour ten.

The last one is the only part that costs money, and it is the part most people replace least often.
