Flat feet get described as a shape, but most people live them as a pattern. Shoes wear out on the inside edge first. Standing still is harder than walking. Long days end with an ache that is not quite the foot and not quite the calf. And every pair of shoes feels different, because there is nothing underneath holding anything consistent.

What flat feet actually need

The instinct is cushioning. The reality is the opposite: what a collapsing arch needs is something that will not collapse with it.

Two things do the work. A deep heel cup, which stabilizes the rearfoot and stops the inward roll before it starts. And firm arch support that stays where it is under body weight — because support that gives way under load is not support, it is padding.

This second one is where most insoles fail, and it fails slowly enough that people blame their feet.

The reason your last pair stopped working

Almost every insole in the category is built from closed-cell foam — sealed gas bubbles in a rubber matrix. It is inexpensive, molds well, and feels excellent new. Under repeated load those bubble walls collapse, and they stay collapsed. The industry calls this pack-out.

Flat feet are the hardest case for it. A collapsing arch puts more sustained pressure on the support than any other foot type does, which means the insoles that need to last longest are the ones that fail fastest. Yours did not wear out. It got shorter.

## About the break-in everyone warns you about

If you have shopped for insoles with flat feet, you have read some version of "expect an adjustment period." That warning is real, and it comes from a specific place: most supportive insoles are built on a solid, continuous plastic shell across the arch and heel. A rigid plate against an arch that is still learning to stay up is a lot to ask on day one.

Ours is built differently. The support frame wraps the heel and extends forward along the inside of the arch as a U rather than a continuous plate, so it carries load along the edges and gives as your arch loads through a step. And your arch rests on foam, not on the frame; the structure sits underneath.

The support is firm. The way it meets your foot is not.

That does not mean you should put them in and work a twelve-hour shift. It means the adjustment is usually shorter and less punishing than with a rigid shell.

How to break them in

1. Two to three hours the first day, in the shoes you wear most.
2. Add an hour or two a day. Most people are wearing them full-time within a week.
3. Some arch awareness in the first few days is normal. Sharp pain is not — back off and add hours more slowly.
4. Pull the factory insole out before inserting ours, or the shoe will feel tight and you will blame the wrong thing.

FAQ

My arch is there when I sit and gone when I stand. Is that flat feet?
That is a flexible flatfoot, and it is by far the most common version. It is also the one that responds best to support, because there is an arch to support — it just needs something to stop it collapsing all the way.

What if I have no arch at all, even sitting?
That is a rigid flatfoot, and it is a different situation. Support can still help with fatigue, but it is worth having a podiatrist look at it rather than working through it with over-the-counter insoles.

Is a high arch shape wrong for flat feet?
It is the common assumption, and it is not that simple. Firm arch support is routinely recommended for flat feet — the deep heel cup and the resistance to collapse matter more than the height itself. What makes a tall shape uncomfortable is usually a rigid plate under it, which is the part we build differently.

How long until I notice something?
Usually within the first week or two of full-time wear. Give it that long before you decide.

Should I be seeing a podiatrist instead?
If you have pain that does not change regardless of footwear, or a foot that has recently changed shape, yes. Over-the-counter insoles are for the large middle of people who need better support — not a substitute for a diagnosis.
